Boston is gearing up for its iconic Fourth of July celebrations, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is making it easier for everyone to join the festivities. The MBTA will provide free rides across all its services—subways, buses, Commuter Rail, and the Silver Line—starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2025. This initiative aims to accommodate the influx of over one million visitors expected for events like the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular and Harborfest.
“Public transit is more than just transportation; it’s the backbone of our celebrations, connecting families and communities,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “We’re excited to offer expanded service this Independence Day, ensuring safe and memorable experiences for all.”
To handle the holiday crowds, the MBTA will operate on modified schedules. Subways will follow a Saturday schedule with boosted service from 3 p.m. until closing. Buses and the Silver Line will run on a Sunday schedule, while Commuter Rail lines will adopt a weekend timetable. Most final trains will leave North and South Stations between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, with adjustments possible to account for fireworks delays.
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng urged the public to take advantage of the enhanced transit options. “Whether you’re heading to a barbecue, a party, or the fireworks over Boston Harbor, let the T get you there,” Eng said. “Our dedicated team is ready to deliver the reliable service our riders expect.”
To ensure a smooth and safe experience, the MBTA will deploy extra staff, Transit Ambassadors, and Transit Police across the system. Riders can report emergencies by calling 911, contacting the MBTA Transit Police, or using the SeeSay app.
